Anticipation

Saturday, December 11, 2004

What feeling is more intense than anticipation?  Knowing that, just around the corner, a long-awaited destination will be reached.

There will be the cries of little girls, gleefully rushing forward as if they were a well-trained football team.  The knowing, exasperated smile of A will be in the background, louder than the kids’ voices.

There will be the sweet joy of being held close again, of saying “I love you” ten thousand times a day.  The silly arguments of “I love you more!” “no, I love YOU more.”

There will be, finally, a chance to share secrets of the months we spent apart.  Things we thought, things we saw, things we did might be released to each other.  Maybe some comfort will come of it all.

And maybe, just maybe, I’ll come up with a really good coming-home gift, which I’m not good for, usually.  Nothing from the store, just something sweet, that’ll make a real impression that I really am truly, helplessly, in love with her.  Still.
